Gross motor skills are important for navigating everyday life, using the body’s large muscles to walk, run, crawl, climb, throw and more. Children must engage in activities to develop gross motor skills if they are to feel confident and in control of their bodies. We offer a variety of gross motor skills activities and games so that children can develop these large muscles as well as balance and stability.

By providing the tools and activities to improve a child’s gross motor skills it also helps assist them for school and learning capabilities. It also encourages exercise and physical activity which is paramount for a healthy lifestyle. Some additional benefits of gross motor development include promoting long-lasting health, encouraging physical literacy, providing energy release, stress relief, and promoting brain development.

Gross motor skills also affect a child’s ability to learn – regular participation in gross motor activities that involve using the larger muscles in the body have been associated with improved academic performance including important school functions such as attention and memory.

Basic Concepts in Motion is a great starting point for young children coming to grips with their capabilities. This fun-filled deck of cards introduces ideas of relative size, space, and distance – comparing big steps with little steps, for example. Basic Concepts in Motion also comes with several game ideas to really engage with children.

The Bean Bag Launching Board makes gross motor development a blast, catapulting soft bean bags into the air for kids to catch. This can be played solo or in pairs to build communication skills and is also a great way to practise balancing.

For a more challenging balance activity, the Stepping Logs and Stones turn your child into a tiny tight-rope walker. The non-slip surface makes them great for any obstacle course, inside or out.
